Lions Hang Tough With Wildcats

HANCOCK, Mich. - The Finlandia University men's soccer team slugged it out toe-to-toe with NCAA Division II Northern Michigan, Saturday afternoon at McAfee Field.  This was an exhibition game with three 30 minute periods.

At 8:49 of the first period, Finlandia was called for a foul in the box.  Junior Ricardo Almanza made a great move to stop the penalty kick.  With 3:04 to go in the period, Almanza was caught out of position.  Freshman Moises Membreno came running through and saved a goal with a brilliant header.

In the second period, Northern Michigan finally broke through and put the ball into the net at the 45:47 mark.  Almanza made two spectacular stops to keep the Wildcats from scoring.  The score was 1-0, Northern Michigan after 60 minutes.

In the third period, the depth of NMU finally wore the Lions down.  The game marked the debut of junior Edward Caballero as team captain.

Finlandia will open up the 2017 season at Northland College on Sept. 1.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. CST
