Matt Farrell

Matt Farrell is in his fourth year as head coach of the Finlandia University softball team.  He is 27-46 with the Lions.

2021 saw the Lions qualify for the Coast-To-Coast Softball tournament, their seventh post-season appearances in the last nine years.  Three players made all-conference and six made the C2C Academic Honor Roll.

In his first year, the Lions qualified for the ACAA tournament for the third straight year and had five All-ACAA selections and an All-Academic honoree.  The 2020 season was limited to 14 games due to Covid-19

Farrell is no stranger to Finlandia as he spent 2018 as an assistant coach for the baseball team.  Previously, he was the first head baseball coach for the Lions (2004-10).

Farrell was a member of the Concord, N.H., team that won the 15-year old Babe Ruth State Championship.  He was a three-time All-Copper Country Conference American Legion selection and the conference MVP in 1988.  Farrell was a pitcher and second baseman for two years at UW-Superior.

Farrell spent 25 years playing in the Copper Country Twilight League.  He was a two-time Playoff MVP Pitcher, four-time Twilight League MVP Pitcher and five-time MVP of the Jack Pastore Memorial Tournament.  In addition, Farrell played seven years in the Copper Country Men’s Fastpitch Softball League before it dissolved in 1995.

Farrell has a B.A. in Mass Communications with a minor in English from UW-Eau Claire.  He was invited to the MLB tryout camps of the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers after graduating from Hancock HS.  Farrell resides in Hancock.  He has two children, Morgan (who works at the Target Corporate Office in Minneapolis, MN.) and Kade (a senior at Houghton HS).
